Heartburn Home Remedies

If there is one condition that seems to plague more people around the world, it has to be heartburn. You would be hard pressed to find anyone on the planet who has not experienced the pain of heartburn at least once in their lives. For other people, this condition is a daily battle that never seems to be won. At least it does not seem that the person living with it can win. Many people end up going on medications for months or years on end, but that does not solve the problem and often causes other issues to arise.

However, there are actually some heartburn home remedies that do work.

  • Chewing gum: Okay, this might seem like a very strange, yet simple solution to a huge problem like heartburn. However, you would be surprised at how effective simply chewing gum can be! Many people misinterpret heartburn for having a lot of air in their stomach. When you chew gum, it allows you to belch and release that air. Often, this is enough to help someone who is suffering from an attack of heartburn.
  • Apple cider vinegar: Did you know that heartburn is often caused by not having ENOUGH acid? That seems to fly in the face of everything you have heard, but many times as we age our production of stomach acid (HCL) reduces. If you do not have enough stomach acid, you are more prone to bacteria and viruses passing through your digestive system because there is nothing strong enough to kill them. Your food also does not break down properly. Apple cider vinegar is a very old, but effective, home remedy for heartburn. It adds back that missing acid and often solves the problem.
  • Wedge pillow: Something as simple as propping up on a wedge pillow when you sleep at night can solve your aching chest as well. These pillows are inexpensive and can easily be found online. They keep you from regurgitating acid back up into your esophagus while you are sleeping.
  • Baking soda: This is another old remedy that still works wonders. Buy a box of baking soda and you will see the mixture you can make for heartburn. Be careful not to do this on a full stomach or it can be dangerous. Also, make sure you follow those instructions to the letter.
  • Digestive enzymes: These are a cheap way to solve your heartburn problems. You can purchase digestive enzymes online or at any health food store. They will add into your stomach the right enzymes to break down your food.
